BEST PRACTICES FOR CHURCH BOARDS:
BASIC EDITION
Your Church Board is filled with godly and gifted individuals seeking the betterment of your congregation and the furthering of the gospel. These people are imperative to the effective and healthy ministry of your church – so why not invite them to a day of instruction and insight into becoming the best board member they can be, individually and collectively.
The focus of the Best Practices for Church Boards: Basic Edition workshop is threefold:
- Giving clarity to the function of a church board
- Offering practical ideas to the effective function of a church board
- Providing concentrated time seeking solutions to key issues critical to the health and development of your church and its board
Workshop Overview:
- Two Plenary Sessions present key principles that guide the practice of board governance.
- An afternoon Working Session allows each church to individually work with a facilitator in seeking a solution to a key issue critical to your church.
- An on-line survey is completed before the workshop by your board members. This survey measures the effectives and health of your church board in 5 areas. Survey results and insights are presented during the Working Session.
- Each participant receives a binder containing the plenary session presentations, survey results, and additional resource materials specific to their church’s key issue.
- Lunch and snacks provided.
Recommendations
“We have certainly benefited from the worship. At the first board meeting after the workshop we spent fifteen to twenty minutes in prayer at the start of session and it made a world of difference. We found things just came together and all were in agreement that it made a difference. Subsequent meeting have also given us opportunity to put what we learned to the test…” Emmanuel Fellowship Baptist Church, Vernon
“We have just had our second Church Board Meeting since attending the Best Practices Workshop. I want to thank you personally for the huge impact that this has already had on our Board. We had a 43 page package to consider and we were finished in 1. 25 hours and then had 1.5 hours to talk about the important issues that we usually never get around to discussing … All of a sudden our board is interested in planning and vision! What a blessing! Thank you, thank you, thank you!” Central Baptist Church, Victoria
Attended Previously:
New updated material will be presented to help congregations deal with current issues and concerns. Church Boards who have attended previous Basic Edition workshops will find this a wonderful opportunity to orient new Board members, refresh their understanding of governance practice, and address new issued facing church governance together.
Registration Benchmarks:
- Entire church board must agree to attend (or as many as possible)
- Senior pastor must agree to be involved
- Former or future board members are encouraged to participate
- All participants must complete an online survey to measure your board health
- You must provide names, addresses and email addresses of all participants
If you are unable to meet one of the benchmarks please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Lyle Schrag at the Fellowship Center for Leadership Development, at 604.888.7592.
Important Note
The afternoon Working Session is led by a facilitator. From our experience it is best if the facilitator is from within your denomination and familiar with your church, as this works to strengthen the relationship your church has within its denomination. This workshop has trained facilitators from within the Fellowship Baptist and North American Baptist denomination. If you are from another denomination we can assist you in finding and training an effective facilitator from within your denomination to work with your board. Honorariums are to be determined between the church and facilitator.
Note: While this is offered for the Vancouver Island Churches – it is opened for all churches…and would make for a wonderful “road-trip” for your leadership team!
